There are
various mind-body techniques for entering a state of
altered awareness. In
a relaxed, comfortable state of mind, with
powerful, positive
suggestions from a trained expert, you can heal
from the inside out. Cheryl incorporates the appropriate methods
for your issues, experiences, and personality. GUIDED
IMAGERY is a form of therapeutic imagery often
used by medical professionals. HYPNOSIS
can enhance your positive subconscious motivation to match your
conscious desire and give you greater personal power. REIKI
is an art that works by massaging the bio-energy fields we emit
– many laws of physics support the evidence of such energy
fields in all matter; as well as the ability of objects, animals
and humans to influence the energies and actions of others.
Proper breathing is important and is a key component of yoga,
Pilates…even birthing techniques. BREATHING
METHODS can release emotions stored in the
physical body. These are only a few of the skills that are woven
into Cheryl’s unique work.
The only
methods that will work for you are the ones to which you are
receptive. You will never be made to do or say anything that is
contrary to your goals, values or beliefs.
Curious About Hypnosis?
You've
seen stage shows where someone seems to lose control and act
ridiculous at the command of a hypnotist. Sometimes they
don't even remember what they did. "How did they do that?"
You wonder. Maybe you think, "No way!
I
can't be hypnotized." Or, "I
don't want someone to make a fool out of me!"
Only about 10% of the population is so highly suggestible
that they can instantly go into the induced hypnotic trance
state. The rest of us need training - some more than others.
A lot depends upon the training and expertise of the
hypnotist and whether they are certified to do THERAPY (credentials).
Many hypnotists have minimal training and can only get their
subjects into lighter states. Is that good enough for you?
Cheryl's training was a year long, with over 760 supervised
clinical hours. She continues her ongoing education to stay
at the cutting edge of mind technologies. Over the years,
Cheryl has helped hundreds of people and she can help you.
But what about
skeptical or analytical
subjects? These are often the people who say they
tried hypnosis but it didn't work.
Some of it depends upon your willingness to go along with
the process. A lot depends upon the rapport and trust you
feel you have with the therapist.
The
skills, training and credentials Cheryl has combined with
the comfort and cooperation you feel make your hypnotherapy
a breakthrough opportunity.
Why Use
Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is
an altered state of awareness, perception or consciousness that
is either self-induced or induced by a trained professional. It
is a highly relaxed state. Hypnosis has been used throughout
history. Modern hypnosis dates back as far as 1773 and the use
of hypnosis
has
been approved by the AMA since 1958. The
American Gastrological Association endorses hypnotherapy as a
therapy for Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Hypnosis was
used in WW2 to reduce the need for morphine in soldiers. The
Mayo Brothers (of the Mayo Clinic) used it to enhance the
effects of chemical anesthesia. It is a highly effective tool
for making dramatic changes in your life.
The
American Psychological Association Division of Psychological
Hypnosis provided the following definition in 1993:
"Hypnosis is a
procedure during which a health professional or researcher
suggests that a client, patient, or subject experience changes
in sensations, perceptions, thoughts, or behavior. The hypnotic
context is generally established by an induction procedure.
Although there are many different hypnotic inductions, most
include
suggestions for relaxation, calmness, and well-being.
Instructions to imagine or think about pleasant experiences are
also commonly included in hypnotic inductions. People respond to
hypnosis in different ways. Some describe their experience as an
altered state of consciousness. Others describe hypnosis as
a normal state of focused attention, in which they feel very
calm and relaxed. Regardless of how and to what degree they
respond, most people describe the experience as very pleasant.
Some people are very responsive to hypnotic suggestions and
others are less responsive. A person's ability to experience
hypnotic suggestions can be inhibited by fears and concerns
arising from some common misconceptions. Contrary to some
depictions of hypnosis in books, movies or on television, people
who have been hypnotized do not lose control over their
behavior. They typically remain aware of who
they are and where they are, and unless amnesia has been
specifically suggested, they usually remember what transpired
during hypnosis. Hypnosis makes it easier for people to
experience suggestions, but it does not force them to have these
experiences." (Executive Committee of the American Psychological
Association Division of Psychological Hypnosis [1993,
Fall].

Bulletin of Division 30, 2, p. 7.)
What Are Some Misconceptions About Hypnosis?
Many people
associate hypnosis with stage shows and have seen participants
do ridiculous things that they would not do consciously. What
is misunderstood is how carefully a stage hypnotist selects
participants and prepares them for the hypnotic state, as well
as the level of willingness the subject has to join in the
fun.
A
professionally trained hypnotherapist
would never suggest that you do or say anything that would
embarrass you or go against your values and principles. You
will not become unconscious and you will be aware of
everything at all times. Your will is not weakened in any
way.
Behavioral
change occurs when you allow the subconscious to
accept positive input - you
have a choice. Nothing will work if you are
unwilling to accept it. Hypnosis is not mind control,
brainwashing or unconscious sleep. You are alert, aware and
involved. When used by a professionally trained hypotherapist,
it is a method of POSITIVE change that occurs only with your
permission and active participation.
When NOT to Use
Hypnosis?
The only people who technically
cannot be hypnotized are the severely mentally handicapped
or the severely psychotic. The rest of us have the ability
to enter a trance state. It is natural and we often drift in
and out of altered mind states (as measured by brain wave
activity) even during our waking hours. For example, when
you are concentrating so hard on a book, video game or
project that you don’t hear someone talking to you; when
your mind drifts while driving and you miss your exit; when
daydreaming or fantasizing; before you go to sleep and when
you first awaken. There are many levels of depth (or
hypnosis) between the fully alert, aware conscious state and
the sleep/dream state. An expert hypnotist like Cheryl is
able to accurately gauge depth of trance and guide subjects
deeper. What is most important to be awakened fully out of
trance afterwards; something lesser-trained hypnotists often
fail to do.
Resistance can be overcome.
Resistance may arise out of fear and anxiety. It may be due
to a conflict with internal belief systems. It is important
to feel a positive personal connection with your hypnotist
because trust makes it easier to achieve hypnotic depth.
Hypnosis does not conflict with
religious beliefs when the hypnotist understands and
respects your personal views. PRAYER is a form of hypnosis!
You enter an altered state of mind that enables you to
become suggestible (influenced) by your higher power. Many
persons are interested in the metaphysical and many are
guided by traditional religions. Many people focus only on
the practical, tangible, scientific aspect of mind power.
The important thing is working within your realm of belief
for most effective results.
Most doctors, psychologists,
psychiatrists, chiropractors, traditional and alternative
healers support the use of hypnosis with a trained and
qualified professional. Cheryl is available to consult with
them; many medical professionals have come in as clients
themselves and have been a source of referrals.
Do NOT use hypnosis if you have
suicidal tendencies. Call 911 if you become suicidal and
seek professional help. Go to suicideprevention.org or call
800-Suicide.
Do NOT use hypnosis if you have
been diagnosed with a dissociative mental condition; contact
a psychiatrist or psychologist.
Do NOT use hypnosis for a serious
diagnosed mental condition without consulting your doctor or
psychologist.
Do NOT use hypnosis without
advising your parent or guardian if you are under 18; let
them interview the professional for your protection.
Do NOT use hypnosis – or any
alternative therapy - if for any reason you are
uncomfortable with the person’s behaviors, gestures,
attitudes, credentials, etc. TRUST is a critical element for
ANY healing modality. Interview the hypnotist to your
satisfaction; most are willing to do this at no charge.
Hypnotherapy is safe, natural,
effective and enjoyable for most people!
